The Women’s First Team secured a commanding 4-1 victory against Austria Wien in the League Phase of the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday night.

The match in Vienna saw Matilde Pavan, Alba Redondo, Kysha Sylla and Julia Bartel get on the scoresheet.

MVP Eva Schatzer, coach Isaac Guerrero and more spoke to the press after the match.

ISAAC GUERRERO

“I’d like to congratulate the girls. I know I say this often, but I’m really very fond of this squad, because I know the work they put in every day, the commitment they show in training and the courage with which they approach every match. I believe this result does justice to everything they’ve been doing over the past four months. What I liked most today was the composure with which we approached the match right from the first minute, both with and without the ball. We were more organised in our defensive transitions and handled a tricky match very well, against an intense, aggressive opponent capable of causing problems for top sides like Inter and Chelsea. We knew that Austria Vienna would play with great energy, trying to press us and limit our possession, but we did well to adapt without compromising our identity. We always want to take the initiative, control the ball and play our own brand of football. Today we also managed our defensive transitions better and, in fact, our opponents only really managed to create danger for us from set pieces. It was a very solid performance and I’m proud of the girls.

"We were coming off the back of a few tough matches against Como 1907, Milan and Roma, in which, in my view, the football hadn’t yielded the results we deserved. We’d created plenty of chances, had plenty of shots on goal and shown some good form, but without achieving the results we’d hoped for. I’ve never had any doubts about this team’s quality. We’re talking about the very same squad that, just a few weeks ago, proved it could compete at the very highest level, securing important results and showing real character against top-class opponents. The message I conveyed to the girls was precisely this: to remember what we’ve been capable of achieving and to keep believing in our work.

“As far as our Champions League campaign is concerned, I consider our performance to have been very positive. It is an extremely demanding competition, in which every match requires focus, quality and character. Against Benfica, we played a match in which, in my opinion, we deserved more. We subsequently showed great character away from home, and today we secured an important victory against a side that had already proven its worth. These results give us confidence and confirm that we’re on the right track. We must also remember that we’re a very young team, with fifteen new signings and several players who don’t yet have much international experience. We’re trying to build a competitive team for the present, because at Juventus you have to get results straight away, but at the same time we want to lay solid foundations for the future. This journey inevitably involves some difficulties and a few painful results, but that’s all part of growing as a team.

"I see enormous potential in these girls and I’m convinced they have a bright future ahead of them. The fact that three of today’s four goals were scored by very young players is a significant sign. I’m also particularly pleased for Eva Schatzer, who deservedly won the Player of the Match award. She’s a humble young woman, who came through our youth ranks and possesses extraordinary qualities. She’s already at a very high level with the ball, but today she demonstrated above all just how important she can be off the ball too – in her work for the team and her ability to support her teammates. She has all the attributes to become an international-class player.

"We have so much talent in every department and we must continue to make the most of it. As for my future and the time needed to complete this process, I’m not worried. Not in the slightest. We’ve had three months of top-class football, with a long run of positive results and the winning of a trophy, before going through a more difficult spell. I’m well aware that top-flight football doesn’t always allow as much time as one might wish, but my job is to keep working, striving every day to help these girls with my strengths and even with my limitations. I believe deeply in this project and in this team. If there are any difficulties, I will face them calmly and responsibly, whilst continuing to give my all. I am convinced that, by maintaining this mindset and this desire to improve, we will achieve further important results.”

EVA SCHATZER

“I’m very pleased with how the match went. We’d been going through a spell where we’d encountered a few difficulties, but today we were very united and tried to make the most of our strengths. We managed to capitalise on the chances we created and can be satisfied with our performance. Now we need to focus on the next match.

“The first goal was very important for us. We knew it would be a closely fought match, not least because our opponents created several chances. We did well to make the most of our opportunities. We celebrated together as a team, showing that we’re a united side, and that’s something that makes me very happy.

“As for the MVP award, I don’t think the credit lies solely with me, but with the whole team. We played well and communicated a lot amongst ourselves. I’m really happy to have received this honour and I want to dedicate it to all my teammates. Austria Wien proved to be a good side. They’d also put in some fine performances in their last two matches and probably deserved to pick up a few more points. But that’s football.”

MATILDE PAVAN

“Scoring today? It’s a special feeling, I wouldn’t even have imagined it in my wildest dreams. I’m delighted to have helped my teammates. We did well to stick together, it’s something we’ve been working on this week, alongside our physical and athletic conditioning, and we’re pleased to have put all of that into practice on the pitch.”

DANIQUE NOORDMAN

“I’m really happy with today’s win. We tackled this match as a team, fighting right to the end and creating several chances. I’m truly proud of the team.
It was very important to get back to winning ways, especially in the Champions League, after a few difficult weeks. Defeats are part and parcel of football, but this victory allows us to look ahead with confidence and continue to grow together.

"I think we made the difference today by playing more attacking football and trying to create more chances. We tried to do something different, perhaps even catching our opponents off guard. We did well to fight as a team and I think, overall, we deserved this win. Austria Wien are a very physical side, strong in one-on-one duels and from set pieces. We struggled at times and know we can improve in that regard, but we managed to play our game better and create more chances.

"Eva Schatzer played a brilliant match. She won lots of one-on-one battles and was a key player for the team. I’m really happy for her and for the recognition she’s received.
For the upcoming matches, we need to build on the spirit we showed today. Even when we lose possession, we must keep fighting together and try to win the ball back as quickly as possible. If we can maintain this attitude, we’ll have a good chance of achieving further positive results.”

KYSHA SYLLA

"I always try to give it my all on the pitch and I’m not afraid to run and make sacrifices for the team. It’s one of my strengths and today, too, I tried to give my all. After conceding the goal, we did well to stay focused. We knew we could score again, but it was vital to stick together and keep working as a team. We spoke to one another and stayed focused. My goal was very important and I’m really proud to have scored in the Champions League. I’d imagined a moment like this so many times, but when it actually happened, I was overwhelmed with emotion.

"I knew my family were watching the match. My mum and my sisters were in front of the TV. Juventus, though, is like a second family to me. When I scored, seeing all my teammates run over to hug me was wonderful. I felt so many emotions and I hope this is just the first of many goals. It’s a goal I want to share with the whole team, because it’s not just mine: it’s the result of the work we do together.

"Eva Schatzer fully deserved the MVP award. She didn’t play for herself, but for the whole team. She gave her all, helping her teammates at every moment, even when we were tired. She showed just how important it is to put the team first, and this recognition is the result of her hard work.”
