The Women’s First Team secured their second consecutive victory in the League Phase of the UEFA Women’s Champions League on Thursday, beating Austria Wien 4-1 in the Austrian capital.

Juventus broke the deadlock late in the first half through Matilde Pavan, before extending their lead in the second half thanks to a penalty converted by Alba Redondo. The home side pulled one back through Lotta Cordes, but Kysha Sylla and Julia Bartel sealed the victory, securing a valuable win for the Bianconere in their European campaign.

PAVAN BREAKS THE DEADLOCK

The match got underway with Austria Wien taking the initiative, looking to control possession and restrict the space available to the Bianconere. Juventus looked to create danger as early as the fifth minute through Redondo, whose shot was deflected for a corner.

The home side responded with an attempt by Cordes in the 13th minute, which was saved by Larissa Rusek, whilst two minutes later Danielle Noordman tried her luck from distance. In the 18th minute, Sylla was called upon to clear the ball following a dangerous header from Modesta Uka.

Juventus grew into the game as the minutes passed, increasing the pressure in the opposition’s half. In the 34th minute, Redondo went down in the box, but the referee waved play on.

The opening goal came in the 39th minute as Eva Schatzer played the ball to Pavan, who cut inside from the left and fired in a precise right-footed shot, beating Jasmin Pal to put the Bianconere ahead. It was a special goal for Juventus’ number 19, her first in the Champions League.

Before half-time, there was also time for another chance for Juventus, with Tatiana Pinto attempting a volley from the edge of the box, narrowly missing the chance to double the lead.

JUVENTUS TAKE CONTROL

In the second half, Austria Wien tried to take the initiative, but it was Juventus who scored their second goal.

In the 14th minute, Estela Carbonell, played in by Noordman, was brought down in the box by goalkeeper Pal. Play continued and the ball ended up in the net following a handball by a Juventus player, but the referee awarded a penalty for the Austrian goalkeeper’s earlier foul.

Redondo stepped up to take the spot-kick and made no mistake, making it 2-0. Juventus managed their two-goal lead, but in the 78th minute the home side briefly brought the game back into contention. Following a corner, Cordes managed to win the header and made it 2-1.

The Bianconeri’s response was immediate. Four minutes later, following a free-kick taken by Schatzer, Pal failed to clear and Sylla was on hand to capitalise, slotting the ball home to make it 3-1.

In the closing stages, Austria Wien tried once more to pose a threat through Uka, who only managed to hit the side netting, before Juventus took further control with a fourth goal.

Bartel made it 4–1 with a superb chip from the edge of the box, beating Pal and sealing the victory. The Bianconere secure another three points in the League Phase of the UEFA Women’s Champions League, building on their success in their previous European away fixture against Häcken.

Schatzer was named the match’s MVP, having played a key role with the assist for Pavan’s first goal and the free-kick that led to Sylla’s goal.
